Unfortunately, films did not appear to retain their mesostructure after calcination. It was proposed that films formed as surfactants diffuse to the interface, where they complex with the polyelectrolyte. The mesostructured inorganic–organic hybrid pigments provide a mechanically and chemically rigid framework that protects the dyes and facilitate handling.
